Clifford Brown Listening Garden Interactive Sound Installation

Located in a public park dedicated to the late jazz musician Clifford Brown, born on October 30, 1930 in Wilmington, DE, this was a collaborative project with Rick Rothrock, sculptor, to create a permanent, interactive sound installation. The project involved long-range motion sensors that triggered the playback of three-channel music from speakers surrounding the central sculpture. The music was a selection of Clifford Brown’s greatest hits.

View of one of the three speakers protected from vandalism and theft by a large overhanging granite slab.

The system I designed includes:

• two Risco WatchOUT DT eXtreme Outdoor Infrared & Microwave sensors targeting a specific spot in the inner circle of the park

• an Arduino Pro microprocessor which receives the sensors’ signal

• three Spark Fun MP3 Player Shields

• three JL Audio M200/2 200W Marine Amplifiers (class D)

• three Atlas ATS183 outdoor garden speakers

• power supplies, timer, wire, etc.
