Book Design, Vox Populi Gallery, Philadelphia, PA

Vox Populi, once a shaky alliance of young artists who wanted to show their artwork in Philadelphia, has just wrapped up its twenty-first exhibition season. It’s an unlikely story of survival – also of excellence and mediocrity, push and shove.

Break

This book catalogs the twenty-first year of programming at Vox: 26 member solo shows, 4 group alumni exhibitions, 1 guest-curated exhibition, 1 juried exhibition featuring 52 emerging artists, 9 Video Lounge exhibitions in new media, and a host of music, film and performance events, discussions, lectures, and parties – all fueled by volunteer labor and collective vision. It is difficult to say exactly how many individuals exhibited, sang, shared info, or walked on stilts at Vox last year.

Abandoned Pools Website

Tommy Walters (known for his early contributions to the band ‘Eels’) is the musician behind this band. This project was part of a broad marketing campaign by Meat and Potatoes that included CD packaging, posters, promotions and this website.

The aesthetics of this website represent Tommy’s odd perspective. The illustrations and information tell a story about what lies ‘beneath the skin’ of this artist and his music.

This site won a Gold Award from the Horizon Interactive Awards in 2002.

Website Design & Development, MCA Records, Los Angeles

Inspired by the album packaging by Tim Stedman at MCA Records, the concept is a fan-zine that you design yourself. The site is a completely customizable flash interface where each visual element is movable and/or clickable and will remain where you release them as you navigate the site. This band was a side project of Travis and Tom from Blink 182.

This site marks a technical acheivement because we were the first to get MCA’s database to populate dynamic flash.

Radium-logo-tn

This website was part of a large re-branding project for Meat and Potatoes, (the design company I co-founded in Los Angeles, 2000-2003). We redefined Radium’s entire brand by instigating a sweeping concept campaign that included re-designing all internal collateral pieces and external packaging, advertising and merchandise. The ‘classic textbook’ style website describes the details of the concept with subtle animated medical illustrations.

Firefly Logo and Main Titles

Design & Motion Graphics, Fox Broadcasting, Los Angeles

Joss Whedon, the creator and director of the television series ‘Firefly’, asked us, (Zoic Studios and me), to create the main titles for this new television show based on the idea of ‘Horses and Spaceships’. We juxtaposed the feeling of the American West with images of a futuristic society which created a kind of ‘Mad Max’ aesthetic.

You can view this piece as part of Meat and Potatoes Promo Video Reel.

The name of this television show is also the name of the primary spaceships’s engine which eminates light from the rear similar to a firefly. The relationship between this ‘effect’ and the show’s title is emphasized in the use of light in the titles.
