Band in a Box Installation
This piece is a continuously-evolving experiment to transform a gallery space into an interactive music experience where the participants become the performers of real-time musical composition.
A small book is placed on the top of the column which invites participants to engage with the piece and write about their experience. Embedded into each side of the column is a sensor that responds to the participant’s presence with a randomly selected audio clip of a single instrument. All audio is pre-recorded in the same key and tempo, resulting in a harmonic composition.
All of the audio components were recorded by myself and Cavan Huang at the same tempo and in the same musical key so that the parts would harmonically blend together as users interacted with the piece.
